The only easy day was yesterday! That is what the drill sergeant will tell them with a smart look on his face while they are getting ready for the next day in hell. “Seals (sea, air, land) take their name from the elements in and from which they operate”(Introduction to Naval Special Warfare 1). “The seals stealth and clandestine methods of operations allow them to do multiple missions against enemies or targets that larger forces could not approach undetected” (Seal Missions 1).
In 1962 President John F. Kennedy created the first seal team that was commissioned. From 1962 to this present day the seals have been always reliable and efficient in high stress situations. Navy Seals can be distinguished from all other military forces because Seals are maritime Special Forces, are highly individually reliable, and their unique training.
Navy Seals are the elite force in the Navy. Seals are efficient all-round, tactical, very clever, proficient shooting accuracy, and highly responsive under pressure. The seals have proven their ability to operate across a range of conflicts and in operations other than war in calm manner. Seals also are very intelligent with excellent hand eye coordination on targets.
“In the early 1960’s the United States felt that they needed highly flexible units that could perform special and highly difficult missions in areas all over the world” (SEAL-Specific Pages 1). That’s when they decided to create the seals.
Whatever the U.S. military needs whether it be enemy ships destroyed in a fortified (well defended) harbor or enemy beach defenses lightened up, the seals are ready to serve with their unique or one of a kind abilities. Seals are committed to combating the global terrorist’s threats. Seals can also swim and parachute proficient in water operations and demolitions.
Seals have various types of missions that they must be ready for if called in. Missions like Direct Action, Special Reconnaissance, Unconventional Warfare, Foreign Internal Defense, and Counter-terrorist are all types of missions the seals will undergo or be ready for while on duty. Seals can also operate forward-deployed Navy ships, submarines and aviation mobility platforms. Seals can basically do anything more proficient than any other military unit.
There are not that many active seals on duty because the seals don’t need that many and very hard to become. Seals have to have physical and mental toughness in all areas of work. You also have to be reliable and perform well under pressure.
Seals are very reliable personal in the most extreme missions that some forces cannot complete. Seals can also keep their composure under the most extreme situations. Even in high stressed areas where anything could happen they still stay calm and perform excellent at the task at hand. “Small teams of six to eight seals would patrol ambush an area or village to gain intelligence” (Seal-Specific Pages 1). The seals would not go after foot soldiers; the seals would go after leaders and political figures.
Seals are so calm and stealthy in the line of fire and never go outside the book or code. Seals never lose their focus or train of thought at what is needed from them to be done. Which is why America has few seals active on duty. Another reason America has less units than any other military is because of their hardcore training.
The seals have the most extreme training in the military. Military experts have said it themselves that they believe it is “The toughest training in the world” (Introduction to Naval Special Warfare)! The seals first week of boot camp is known as “Hell week”. There are many training courses they must go through that are long, rough and will mentally and physically challenging.
Seal training is extremely demanding, both mentally and physically, and produces the world's best maritime warriors. They focus their training on three core pillars: Men of character, where seals have to uphold the Navy Core Values, Honor, Courage, and Commitment. Physical, where seals have to be physically fit and capable in every environment, especially the water. Technical, where seals have to be intelligent and can quickly learn new tasks.
The “S” in seals stands for sea. Seals have to undergo Scuba and Underwater Dive System training. Seals also go through BUD/S or Basic Underwater Demolition training. BUD/S starts off with a five week indoctrination, a eight week basic conditioning, a eight week diving course, a nine week land warfare training, a three week basic parachute training, and then receive Naval Special Warfare Classification.
The “A” in seals stands for air. Seals have to undergo air operations training. Seals cannot be afraid of heights and have to parachute repeatedly but also be ready for war and contain their composure after a free fall drop. Seals also get dropped in water and must be prepared to swim or scuba dive through enemy lines.
The “L” in seals stands for land. Seals have to practice their shooting accuracy as well as how to operate multiple vehicles and learn to be tactical and stealthy. The training is extent and long, teaching the personal discipline and what is expected from a seal.
There are Advanced Courses in training like: A two-week Special Operations Technician Course for dive related disorders. “A two-week course covering the use of the MK 16 UBA which is the most complex diving equipment in the navy” (Advanced Courses 1). There is a one-week Diving Maintenance Course which teaches disassembly and reassembly on diving rigs. The seals weapon system is a two-week course that teaches advance underwater demolition techniques. The last advanced course is the Special Warfare Combat Crewman Program that is nine weeks long which teaches skills required to operate and maintain the various special operations crafts that support special operations forces.
In other words the Navy seals are highly flexible and the most advanced and effective tactical force in the U.S. military. The seals are focused, highly reliable, physically and mentally fit for the most extreme conditions, and undergone the most extreme training regarded by many military experts in the world. In conclusion, Navy Seals can be distinguished from all other military forces because Seals are maritime Special Forces, are individually reliable, and their unique training. |
